It’s DIY Friday- the day I post a creative (and easy) DIY project for using your photos! Today’s Photo Clipboard idea comes from the blog “Love Grows Wild.” She creates photos specifically for her display, but this would be a great way to use your family vacation photos- and then trade them out new pix […]

A perfectly simple affair, between a perfectly perfect pair. The setting was Jacob’s Beach in Guilford and there were just two guests. After the ceremony, we spent an hour capturing the beauty of the setting, and the absolute joy of the couple!

What could be more romantic than a leisurely stroll through New Haven’s beautiful Edgerton Park? For Lynesha and Thomas’ engagement session, we did just that- strolled through the park, stopping at various spots along the way, laughing and talking. There two kids joined us, and were super helpful in finding creative ways to make their […]

It is always flattering when I’m asked to photograph someone- the fact that they trust me to capture their image- often before they’ve even met me- is something I take very seriously. Ironically, then, the sessions themselves are very relaxed, and often fun. It is only when my clients are able to relax that I am able to capture […]

A beautiful wedding at the Madison Beach Club in Connecticut

I’ve rarely seen a couple bring out the best in each other as beautifully as Katie & Dave! They are both so kind- and kind-hearted- but when they are together, their eyes light up and the magic begins. Bringing their families together was an important part of the day and it infused the event with such beautiful energy that everyone felt like a member of the extended family!

Erin and Ryan chose the quietly beautiful Penfield Beach in Fairfield, Connecticut, for their engagement photos. We had almost the entire beach to ourselves- as they walked and laughed and talked amidst the surf and sand…

I love it when clients get into their photo sessions– it makes it so much fun! Cate took this opportunity to really have fun with the session as we toured East Rock Park. The best smiles emerged, though, when her boyfriend showed up. Her smile went from lovely- to crazy beautiful in 0.2 seconds!

Building a theme into a photo session can be so much fun- most especially because I get to watch my clients get creative with concepts and props. This newborn photo session had a Yankee baseball theme- not for every shot, but for a few in particular. The results were sweet and beautiful…

Ilana and Corey were living in New Haven, but getting married out-of-state. I usually love engagement sessions because I really get to know the bride and groom before their big day, but this was one instance that this would be my only chance to get to know them! We met at East Rock Coffee in New […]

Hello! My name is Karissa Van Tassel and I am an accredited photographer based in New Haven, Connecticut. I am passionate about the power of a photograph to connect us to each other, to our memories, and even to our own reflections.

My team and I create timeless photographs for our clients, but it is so much more than that. I've spent the last decade developing an experience for you that is both fun and memorable. I've created partnerships that give us access to unbelievably beautiful products so your photographs aren't just beautiful, they are truly works of art. In short, my team and I take great care with every detail of your photoshoot- from the makeup we use (do you have any allergies?) to the backdrops and wardrobe we purchase and even the final products you take home.

When I'm not at the studio I love to travel, capturing new photographs for my fine art series. My work can be found in private collections around the world, and has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, National Geographic, Forbes, MSN, and Connecticut Cottages & Gardens. I am a fellow at Yale University's Morse College and live in New Haven with my husband, Dr. Paul Van Tassel,  and our three kids.
