When I first heard about the tragedy in Newtown, I was at Costco. I was just checking out when the cashier told me he’d just heard that there was a shooting at a K-2 school in Connecticut. My first reaction, of course, was how incredibly sad that was- and right before Christmas. He went on to try to remember exactly where the shooting had taken place, “New… New… I can’t remember.” And at that moment it suddenly occurred to me for just.one.second. that I have a child at a K-2 school in Connecticut. In New Haven. And for that split second (and it was only a split second), terror filled my heart. He did finally remember the name of the town but I was already reeling.
Perhaps because of that, or perhaps because it all happened so close to us, or perhaps simply because the victims were innocent children, it hit home for me. I wanted to do something, but didn’t have any idea where to begin. Until now. I’ve spent the last couple weeks reading about the children, the unbelievably courageous teachers, and about all of their lives. Each of the stories are illustrated by pictures of happy children playing with their friends, of families on vacation, and stuffed animals.
Along the way, I heard about 26 acts of kindness movement and it seems to me there could be no better way to show tribute to these little lives than to share the love and joy they brought into this world. So here it begins. As a photographer, I have the true privilege of capturing couples and families making memories- and I want to make sure all of them have those memories in front of them- so, for my first act of kindness, I am offering each couple & family I photographed in 2012 a free 8×10″ print from our session (if you are a client, you will receive an email shortly with the details). My only request is that you find a place in your home or office to frame the photograph so it will remind you daily of the wonderful memories you have with those you love.
To all of my clients, thank you for an incredible 2012. It was the best year yet for the studio, and for me personally. I treasure the connections I’ve made with each of you and hope to see more of you in 2013!!
Here’s to sharing the love!!
